Unit 1: Catullus on Poetry >>

In this, our introductory unit, we will get our bearings on Roman lyric from Catullus's own views on poetry — his own and that of others.

What is the difference between a doctus poeta and a hack? Between, say, a Calvus or a Cinna and a Suffenus or a Caesius? More important, where does Catullus belong within this range?
